As part of the upcoming Jazz Master Summit, I interviewed Mark Egan, the bass player of the quartet that recorded those early Pat Metheny albums The Pat Metheny Group and American Garage. That group consisted of Pat, Mark, Danny Gotlieb and Lyle Mays.
At the end of my interview with Mark, I asked him to share a few words about Lyle who passed away a little more than a week ago.
Before Mark spoke, I told my one Lyle Mays story about seeing him in action speaking to students in my high school band room. That demonstration Lyle made at the piano has lasted my entire life.
Here’s a seven minutes tribute to the great Lyle Mays.
