A teacher at the New England Conservatory wrote me after buying Jazz Ear Savvy. He said that I would appreciate a book by the great Ran Blake called Primacy of the Ear.
It’s the best book I’ve ever read relative to the importance of deeply hearing the music and developing one’s ability to listen really well. If you don’t know about Ran, he is a great piano player and one of the world’s leading scholars of jazz. The book is full of recommendations of great recordings along with his description of why they are great. There’s very little musical notation. It is very conceptual about the process of creating music.
