One of many exercises I’ve created for the book Rhythm Savvy is what I call Maniacal Metronome. It consists of clicks over a steady time. But the metronome is not just four clicks to a bar. There are bars of 3, 4, 5, 6, and even 7 clicks to the bar. I’ve included a kick on the downbeat in order to get you started but it drops out in about 20 seconds and comes back a bit later to confirm that you are on the beat.
The exercise is for you to play steady time over this maniacal metronome. Maybe start out just playing quarter notes on the downbeats and evolve to improvising eighth notes or whatever.
I’m interested in how easy or difficult these are for you. I’ve heard people pick it up immediately and others who couldn’t follow it at all.
Attached are the three files arranged by their level of difficulty (#1, #2 and #3). Try it.
